In the Beginning...
In September 2005, 12-year old entrepreneur, and avid Baseball player David Phillips used the proceeds of his neighborhood pet care business to fund the start-up of Southpaw Express, to import and sell an amazing collection of wool-insulated, ice-free coolers & koozies from Australia. Making his initial sales to friends and neighbors, and through some local gourmet food & wine shops, who could have imagined what the future would bring. [more...]
One year later, David and Team Southpaw (David’s parents) were displaying a selection of our great Aussie coolers at local, regional, and national events, including the prestigious Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World. We also started growing a select network of boutique retail shops from Virginia to California. During these early years Southpaw Express was intentionally kept small, as it came behind School and Baseball on David’s list of priorities. [less...]
Dawn of a Dream...
As High School graduation approached, David came to his parents with the idea of growing the business while in college, because he believed that growing Southpaw Express was what he wanted to do after college. Over the next four years, David studied Business, played Baseball, and worked with the support of his family to grow the business. And, grow it did. [more...]

It’s Pronounced Wool-am-I...
As both David and the business grew during his collegiate career, the vision for the future of the business grew as well. It became clear that the business needed a more fitting moniker. In 2015, we began searching for the perfect name. By graduation day 2016 … Cape Woolamai Mercantile Co. was born. [more...]
Cape Woolamai Mercantile Co. draws our inspiration from the history and heritage of Australia, and our own Welsh-American roots. Cape Woolamai is a small town on the southeast tip of Phillip Island, named for Captain Arthur Phillip, the Captain of the First Fleet, and the first Governor of New South Wales. In 1868, the area was purchased by sea captain, entrepreneur, and sportsman John Cleeland, who built Woolamai House, from which he ran merino sheep to New South Wales, trained champion thoroughbreds, and helped to establish Cape Woolamai.
Cape Woolamai Mercantile is at the tip of our own “Phillips Island”. David is a 4th-generation entrepreneur, explorer and sportsman. The great-grandson of Arthur Phillips, the hard-working son of a Welsh stone cutter, who opened Phillips Hardware in the small farming community of Richville, NY, at the age 28. Arthur Phillips’ life-long dedication to bringing the best to his customers and community serves as a guiding light for our family business today. [less...]
