Only the Finest Materials. When you wear a Newcastle Hat you can wear it with confidence that your Hat is intended to protect you, and not only from the Sun. Newcastle Hats are proudly made in Australia by the experts at VISIONSafe, leaders in quality safety gear
The motive is in the moniker … VISIONSafe. Every Newcastle Hat is made from materials which are tested and sourced from ISO certified suppliers, so you can count on the quality and safety of your hat.
When VISIONSafe began testing materials from some of the biggest suppliers supporting the apparel industry, they were distressed by all the residual chemicals they found in the fabrics. As VISIONSafe Founder Dean Roberts explains it, “You are going to place this hat on the part of your body where the skin between the surface and your blood vessels is thinnest. Do you want to have residual amounts of formaldehyde, lead, and other dangerous chemicals directly touching your skin there?” Particularly when you may be hot and sweaty.
Don’t Get Burned by Misleading Sun Protection Claims. Many hat and apparel manufacturers are cavalier in how they throw around sun protection claims. For a Hat to claim a UPF Rating in Australia (the most stringent standards) it must be compliant with the AS 4399:2020 standard:
- The material from which the Hat is made must be UPF rated (usually UPF 50 or 50+).
- The fabric component with the lowest rating used in the Hat determines the UPF rating overall.
- The design must be secure fitting to maintain coverage in normal use during outdoor activities.
- It must have a minimum Brim width of 6cm (2.4 inches) for Bucket Style Hats; a 6cm (2.4 inches) minimum Brim width for Broad-brimmed hats with a head circumference up to 56cm (22 inches); and 7.5cm (2.95 inches) for Broad-brimmed Hats with a head circumference larger than 56cm (22 inches).
- And, the Hat must be clearly labeled stating the protection level.
Newcastle Sun-Safe Hats stand up to the toughest standards in the World because your comfort and safety is their business.
Who Counts on Newcastle Hats? In Australia, Newcastle Hats sells extensively to commercial customers. Road Crews, Forestry Services, Landscaping Services, Schools (every school has a uniform, and every uniform has a hat), and others who work outside in the toughest Sun conditions in the World. They trust their heads and health to Newcastle Hats. If you are looking for a sun safe hat that comfortably wears … works … washes … repeat … you want a Newcastle Hat.
YES … You Can Wash Your Newcastle Hat. You will find washing instructions on the Size & Care Tag on most Newcastle Hats. Some tips for keeping you your hat in top form:
- Hand Wash Only. Washing machine agitators and Hats do not get along.
- Use a light detergent. Strong detergents and grease cutting formulas can discolor your hat.
- Oxi-clean and other “color safe” prewashes can help tone down sweat stains.
- Common Sense goes a long way. If you sweat through your Hat, or get it covered in dirt and grime, give it a wash before stains get a chance to set in.
- Keep your hat out of direct sunlight when drying. Stuffing it with towels as it dries can also help your hat maintain its best shape. You can also try the old Ballplayer’s Trick: Wash your hat, then wear it dry. Depending on the hat, this can help your hat more quickly take the shape of your head.
You take your comfort and safety seriously. So does VISIONSafe. And so do we … Put on a Newcastle Hat and Experience a Slice of the “No Worries” Life.

Identifying Australian Hat Styles is a little more loosely defined. Cape Woolamai Mercantile Co.® categorizes our Authentic Aussie Hats based on the following criteria, to help you find the right style for your purposes. Cheers Mate! | |
| Cattleman | More Dress than Working Hat. Crafted from Premium Materials, it can often (but not always) feature a creased Crown and a decorative Hatband. Often featuring a Wide to X-Wide Brim, and a Medium to Tall Crown. The Owner of the Ranch may wear a Cattleman, while the Ranch Hands are wearing a Stockman or Traveller. |

| Traveller | A durable hat designed to wear lighter, and be more packable. Crafted from High Quality to Top Grade Materials, with a focus on Functional styling, a Traveller will typically feature a solid Brim, Crown & Stand, which can be foldable or squashable/packable. A Medium to X-Wide Brim and Low to Medium Crown provides protection in all conditions. |
| Bush | The Bush Hat Style draws its name from the characteristics of the Australian Outback. Typically, a Stockman Hat with added ventilation to help you best the heat. A Medium to X-Wide Brim helps provide Sun protection. A Medium to Tall Crown gives the heat room to rise until it can be vented out. |
| Cap | Caps typically have little to no Brim, and wear low on the head. Baseball Caps, vented Trucker Caps, Driving Caps, and Scully’s are all common examples of Caps. |
| Slouch | Best known for the ANZAC Military Hat. A Slouch Hat is typically crafted from Top- to Premium Quality materials (often Felt), featuring a creased Crown and Stand, with the Left side of the brim pinned up. |
| Specialty | Fascinators, Bucket Hats, Floppy Sun Hats, “Crushable”, and “Soaker” Hats are just a few examples of Specialty Hats. Specialty Hats of the kinds listed here are commonly meant to be worn for limited purposes, and a limited amount of time. They are typically not meant to provide the functional flexibility, wear life, or Sun protection provided by other styles. |
