Roo Squashy
The Perfect Combination of Moo & Roo. Cow Leather is thicker & stiffer than Kangaroo Leather. Kangaroo is thinner, lighter, stronger, and more flexible than Cow hide. Put the 2 together and you get the Roo Squashy, the original Moo & Roo squashable, packable Outback hat.
What You Need to Know  (1 min. read)
- Hand crafted in Australia with a Cow Hide Crown & Brim, and Kangaroo leather gusset.
- Kangaroo is ½ the weight, twice the strength, and gives you as much as 3 times the wear life of a comparable Cow hide (more info below).
- The thicker, stiffer Cow hide makes for a firmer brim and crown.
- The softer, lighter, stronger Kangaroo leather allows you to press your hat flat to pack, and bounce right back.
- The Roo Squashy wears lighter, longer, softer, stronger, and cooler than an all Cow hide hat … and squashes down.
- 50+ UPF Sun protection rating (blocking 98%+ of the Suns UV rays). Helping protect your neck, ears, eyes, and face.
- Water repellant to protect you from the elements. The brim and gentle slope of the hat allows the rain to run off you, not down you.
- Backed by Jacaru’s 10-Year Warranty. You can wear it out, but you’ll travel in comfort and style every step of the way.
Jacaru is the gold standard for quality Leather hats, and has been making out-of-this-world hats since America first put men on the moon in 1969. If you like the stiffer look and feel of a Cow hide hat, but like the packability of Kangaroo, the Roo Squashy is for you.

Why Construct a Hat of Both Cow & Kangaroo Leather? Each of these leathers has distinct characteristics which make them excellent materials for millinery work. Jacaru employs the strengths of each of the leathers to create what has become one of our Best Selling hats, the Roo Squashy.
- Cow Leather is thicker and stiffer than Kangaroo, which makes it well suited for constructing a hat with a fixed shape, and firmer brim.
- Kangaroo Leather is thinner, softer, lighter, stronger, and more resilient than Cow Leather, which makes it well suited for creating the squashable Gusset required to make the Roo Squashy a packable hat which keeps its shape and styling over years of wear and travel.
1/2 the Weight and Twice the Strength of Cow Hide. Most Americans have known Cow Hide all their lives. Perhaps Kangaroo is new to you. Australia is home to one of the most extreme climates in the World. Kangaroos commonly inhabit territories burdened by sparse food supplies and extreme heat. Lending to the Kangaroo’s hide being virtually fat free, and exceptionally strong. Resulting in Kangaroo leather being lighter, thinner, softer, and stronger than Cow Hide. Which in turn makes for a lighter, thinner, softer, stronger, more flexible, and cooler wearing Hat.
Up to 3 Times the Wear Life. Ounce for ounce Kangaroo is the strongest leather in the World. Comparative testing done by the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) has determined that the tight fiber structure and greater tensile strength of Kangaroo leather delivers up to 3 times the wear life as a comparable Bovine (Cow) leather. By using Kangaroo for the Gusset of the Roo Squashy, each leather is being asked to perform the function it does best.
360-Degree Elasticity, No “Breaking-In” & Greater Resilience. Beneath the surface of this soft, light, luxurious leather is a highly uniform fiber structure, which gives the leather its superior strength, 360-degree elasticity, and excellent resilience against tears. It is this elasticity which allows for the squashability of the Gusset, and the strength of the fiber allows it to perform so well through repeated use.
Responsibly & Sustainably Sourced to Conserve a National Treasure. The Kangaroo is the symbol of Australia. Not an endangered species, high-reproduction rates and a lack of natural predators can lead to over population, exhaustion of food supplies, starvation, and disease. Threatening the very survival of these amazing creatures. To sustain strong, healthy Kangaroo populations, Australia has instituted a strict, federally controlled, culling program. It is from this conservation program that Jacaru legally and responsibly sources the finest leather from which to craft their luxurious leather goods.
Premium Leather from a Rugged Environment. Kangaroos live a life as rough and rugged as the land on which they live. Living in the wild, these uniquely Australian creatures get scratched and scarred from encounters with rocks, other Roo’s, Dingoes, and other dangers. Every hide bears the scratches, scars, and other blemishes of a life in the wild. That scar or scrape you find in your hat is not an “imperfection”, it is a unique reminder that your hat is as tough as Australia.
How Do I Select a Hat That Fits? There are 3 keys to selecting the right hat for you:
- The hat must first fit your eye. If you don’t like the look of the hat, if it does not match your sense of style, you are unlikely to wear it once you get it home. Only you can determine if a hat fits your eye.
- The hat must fit your head. Your hat should hug your head but not squeeze your head. Comfortably snug when sitting properly on your head is the correct fit. Only you can determine if a hat fits your head.
- Finding the Right Fit. The best way to find the right fit is to start by measuring your head to determine your hat size. We can help you with that. See our Jacaru Hat Sizing Chart to help you find your size.
- Start with only the finest materials.
- Coupled with a catalog of classic & creative designs.
- To which they apply their knowledge and skills, honed over decades of experience.
- To create exceptional, well-fitting, comfortable, and durable headwear.
- Responsibly sourced & crafted in Australia by this family-owned Australian business.

SIZING NOTE: Cape Woolamai does not stock the “Med/Lrg” size hats. We find that most people for whom a Medium is too snug, and a Large is a little loose, they are better served by using a Hat Reducer to properly fit the larger hat. Minor fluctuations in hair style, weight, and even temperature can impact the fit of your hat. A removable Hat Reducer offers more flexibility to comfortably adjust to Life’s changes.
ORDERING NOTE: Use a flexible tape to measure your head as illustrated here. Include your measurement in the Special Instructions block on the Shipping Page and our Packing Team will strive to find the hat which will best fit you.
AUSSIE HAT STYLES | |
| Fedora, Top Hat, Bowler, Beret, Panama, or Western Hat most people who know anything about hats can visualize these styles, who typically wears them, and where they are worn. Identifying Australian Hat Styles is a little more loosely defined. Cape Woolamai Mercantile Co.® categorizes our Authentic Aussie Hats based on the following criteria, to help you find the right style for your purposes. Cheers Mate! | |
| Cattleman | More Dress than Working Hat. Crafted from Premium Materials, it can often (but not always) feature a creased Crown and a decorative Hatband. Often featuring a Wide to X-Wide Brim, and a Medium to Tall Crown. The Owner of the Ranch may wear a Cattleman, while the Ranch Hands are wearing a Stockman or Traveller. |
| Stockman | A hat that is not afraid of hard day’s work. Typically crafted from Top Grade Materials, and more Functional than Decorative in styling. Typically features a Wide to X-Wide Brim, and Medium to Tall Crown. Crafted to stand up to rugged everyday wear. |
| Traveller | A durable hat designed to wear lighter, and be more packable. Crafted from High Quality to Top Grade Materials, with a focus on Functional styling, a Traveller will typically feature a solid Brim, Crown & Stand, which can be foldable or squashable/packable. A Medium to X-Wide Brim and Low to Medium Crown provides protection in all conditions. |
| Bush | The Bush Hat Style draws its name from the characteristics of the Australian Outback. Typically, a Stockman Hat with added ventilation to help you best the heat. A Medium to X-Wide Brim helps provide Sun protection. A Medium to Tall Crown gives the heat room to rise until it can be vented out. |
| Cap | Caps typically have little to no Brim, and wear low on the head. Baseball Caps, vented Trucker Caps, Driving Caps, and Scully’s are all common examples of Caps. |
| Slouch | Best known for the ANZAC Military Hat. A Slouch Hat is typically crafted from Top- to Premium Quality materials (often Felt), featuring a creased Crown and Stand, with the Left side of the brim pinned up. |
| Specialty | Fascinators, Bucket Hats, Floppy Sun Hats, “Crushable”, and “Soaker” Hats are just a few examples of Specialty Hats. Specialty Hats of the kinds listed here are commonly meant to be worn for limited purposes, and a limited amount of time. They are typically not meant to provide the functional flexibility, wear life, or Sun protection provided by other styles. |
